Happy New Year???

Well hello, 2018!  I can’t say we started off on the best footing…  I feel like I have a major hangover, and I don’t even drink!  It’s called sleep deprivation, caused by numerous inconsiderate neighbors who simply must shoot off fireworks - loud, screaming, booming fireworks - until 2:30 in the morning. Not only were they keeping me awake, but my poor dog was on the verge of a cardiac episode. I had given him two Benedryl - which I really don’t like to do, but sometimes there is no other option. They didn't help. Next year he goes to the kennel!

Now, I truly do understand that these people were only celebrating the new year, but seriously, can’t we keep some sort of moderation in the mix, for those people - and animals - who are sensitive to loud noises?  Someone just down the road sent off a rapid succession of all kinds of noise-makers, that lasted for almost ten full minutes - I timed it.

My poor dog paced, and whined, and barked, and was on and off the bed, seeking some form of relief from those horrible thunderous noises. When the revelry finally subsided at around 2:00, with occasional stragglers until 2:30, my dog jumped up on the bed next to me, which he rarely does in the middle of the night, trembling like a leave in a stiff breeze. I was seriously concerned. I’ve heard that those thunder shirts help, but they’re also pricey and I can’t afford one. What I did have however, was a previous dog's old coat and I put that on my pup - it fit around him but I couldn’t zip it all the way closed. No matter though because it did seem to help some.

After everything quieted down, my dog continued to pace and whine and, at 2:45 in the morning I realized that, because fireworks were already starting up by 7:00, he had not gone out to potty before we went to bed. I had tried to take him out but someone’s fireworks exploded in the sky the next block over, which scared him into a barking frenzy and he ran back in the house.  So back out of bed for the umpteenth time, put him on the long lead and let him outside. First thing he noticed was the bright full moon overhead, and obviously thinking that was going to explode as well, he started barking at it.  Sigh….

But we did manage to get the job done and once we were both settled back in bed, the rest of the morning was peaceful.

I was awakened at 6:30 am by a very bouncy and energetic dog, wide awake and ready to play. Really pup, we have got to have a serious talk about your morning routine…
